Notre sensibilité personnelle à la construction terre nous a amenée à nous investir dans ce projet, avec l'idée de réinsuffler les méthodes de construction d'une pratique ancestrale dans un projet contemporain.
La terre occupe déjà les lieux, elle en donne son sol, sa couleur, son ambiance. La retrouver dans les murs des futurs bâtiments de l'université assure une continuité de l'espace vierge à l'ensemble construit.
Puits de savoir, la bibliothèque unit diverses activités en offrant à tout moment de la journée un temps de pause, le fruit d'une recherche, la dynamique d'un travail de groupe, le calme d'une lecture.
C'est dans cet état d'esprit que le module pensé s'articule : les murs de pisé extérieurs, épais, isolent la bibliothèque de son environnement proche et protègent l'usager des rayons solaires directs, de la chaleur constante et de l'animation extérieure. La salle de travail et la salle de lecture se retrouvent ainsi tournées vers le centre du bâtiment : un patio paysager, à la fois espace extérieur et pièce à part entière de la bibliothèque.
La topographie du sol creusé offre à chaque niveaux, plusieurs ambiances. L'un, de plein pied depuis l'entrée est propice au travail et à la recherche, l'autre dans un renfoncement sculpté par des marches en gradins invite le visiteur à s'asseoir pour une lecture. Le patio est un prolongement de la salle de lecture.
L'épaisseur des murs d'enceinte de l'ouvrage est aussi sculptée pour accueillir le mobilier de rangements et les assises. La bibliothèque, ses livres et ses usagers forment ainsi une seule et même entité, complétée dans un second temps par quatre tables de travail et deux assises amovibles basses jumelées d'un casier. L'espace intérieur peut ainsi être aisément libéré et être consacré à divers usages.
La toiture se décolle de l'enceinte grâce au soutien d'une fine structure bois qui dessine la transition entre l'espace proprement intérieur et le patio. Ainsi elle assure une ventilation constante au cours de la journée. De plus le débord de toiture permet une évacuation des eaux à distance grâce à sa double inclinaison.
Le patio végétalisé apporte également un rafraîchissement ambiant et un éclairage naturel généreux à la bibliothèque. Ce dispositif de rafraîchissement est soutenu par le faible percement des murs périphériques qui oriente l'usager vers le patio, poumon vert du lieu.
Module simple dont la multiplication assurera à long terme une déclinaison des espaces bibliothèque, il offre un premier lieu de sérénité et de concentration pour les prémices de l'université.
Being particularly sensitive to rammed earth construction, we got involved in this project with the idea of bringing ancestral building techniques back into contemporary architecture. The packed native soil of the walls and floor of the library emphasizes the continuity between the virgin soil and the building, creating a special atmosphere.
A school's library is a fount of knowledge, which allows students to enjoy different activities and opportunities for learning throughout the day, whether it be a peaceful break enjoying calm reading time, or reaping the rewards of research and dynamic group activities.
The library has been designed and structured with thick exterior rammed earth walls, insulating the interior and protecting the students from direct sunlight, constant heat, and any outside noise.
The ground's topography is dug in order to offer a different atmosphere at each level. The first one, on the same level as the entrance, is designed for studying and research. The second, invites the visitor to sit for an individual or collective reading session in a hollow space sculpted by terraced steps. The working area and the reading area are located facing a centralized, landscaped patio, designed both as a courtyard as well as a room for the library.
The surrounding walls are also sculpted in their thickness to accommodate bookshelves and sitting areas. Thus the library, its books, and its users form one whole entity including four tables and two mobile seating areas. This way, the interior can easily serve as a multipurpose area for activities beyond quiet reading.
The garden-like patio, acting like green lungs for the entire structure, is an extension of the reading room, and invites a generous amount of natural light into the library, as well as natural cooling via the slightly perforated walls.
The detached roofing is held by a thin wooden structure, underlining the transition between the strictly interior space and the patio, and guaranteeing constant ventilation throughout the day. Moreover, the overhanging roof and its double inclination allows rainwater to be routed away from the rammed earth walls.
This simple module, which can be multiplied as an expansion when the school grows, offers the students and teachers an earth-built library, where serenity and tranquility encourages focus and concentration.
